History and Further Information
This award was established in 2025 to honor the exceptional service and leadership of Dionysios (Dion) Demetriou Dionysiou (1966-2023) to the ACS Division of Environmental Chemistry and for his outstanding research contributions in the exploration of innovative technologies for water treatment. Born on the island nation of Cyprus, he earned a BS in Chemical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens then moved to the USA to complete graduate degrees, MS in Chemical Engineering from Tufts University, and a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Dion Demetriou Dionysiou served as a faculty member in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Cincinnati (UC) for more than two decades as a dedicated teacher and mentor to hundreds of students, faculty, and research scholars. He was also a strong advocate for young researchers, women, and underprivileged groups. Professor Dionysiou was passionately dedicated in his service to the environmental science and engineering professions, especially to the ACS Division of Environmental Chemistry, where he made significant contributions through his extensive roles in leadership and on committees.
